Review, Blog Tour and Giveaway: The Destiny of Violet & Luke, by Jessica Sorenson

17152025
OH.MY.WORD!!!! A cliffy!!!! A STINKIN’ CLIFFHANGER!!!! I am devastated after finishing this. How can I deal with this?? Now I have to wait months to find out what happens. I am just sick, thinking of it. But I must clam down. *deep breath*

Luke and Violet have had the hardest time, growing up. They were exposed to things, as children, that no child should see.

Luke has tried to forget his past, by throwing himself to every girl that shows interest. He’s a big tough on the outside, but on the inside, he just wants to be loved. If he could only escape his mind, he would be whole. But the past always creeps up on him.

Violet’s parents were murdered, when she was 6. She was bounced for foster home to foster home. Never truly finding a real home with real love. She wakes up every morning, from a dream of their deaths. In order to get a break from feeling real, she avoids everyone, and does very dangerous things, just for the rush. She just wants to finish college and move on, but then she meets Luke.

Luke and Violet’s relationship is very hard on each of them. They can’t stand each other and yet can’t stand to be away from each other. After a while, they realize that they have feelings that they don’t know how to handle. They’re not used to needing anyone. But soon they find themselves leaning on each other, when they need it the most.

However, that ending…I am still reeling from it. I just can’t believe it. Seriously. What am I supposed to do now??

EXCERPT
Luke
She reaches for my fries with an undecided look on her face. “So I have a question.”
“Okay…”
“About you.”
I slowly chew my food. “I’m not really sure I want to hear your question now.”
She picks a pickle off of her burger, pulling a repulsed face. “Well, I’m still going to ask it.”
I grab a handful of fries from the tray that’s on the table between us. “Go ahead and ask but it doesn’t mean I’ll answer.”
She props her elbows onto the table with her burger in her hand. “Why haven’t you ever talked to me before? I mean, we’ve walked past each other probably a hundred times, but never so much as acknowledged each other and then suddenly you’re stalking me.”
I pick up my soda and sip from the straw. “First off, I’m not stalking you. I just can’t seem to get rid of you.”
“You didn’t have to stop to pick me up.”
“Yeah, I did.”
“Why? You don’t know me—you’re in no way obligated to help me.”
“I know, but I wanted to.”
“Why?”
I shrug, setting my drink down. “Why not?”
She gives me a funny look, like I’m the most confusing person in the world, when really she should be looking at herself like that. “I don’t get it. Why would someone like you help someone like me?”
I open up the bun of my chicken sandwich to pick the tomato off. “What do you mean someone like me and someone like you?”
She points at me. “You as in a football player who has friends.” Then she points at herself. “And me as in the loner girl who could probably kick your ass.”
I choke on a laugh and my mouth full of food almost shoots out of my nose. “You could not kick my ass,” I cough, and then take a swallow of my drink.
She scans me over while scooping up some fries. “I beg to differ. I think you’re not as tough as you try to look.”
“Do you really?” If only she knew what really lay inside me. “Because most people think I am and for a good reason.”
“I think it’s all for show,” she replies nonchalantly and I can’t tell if she’s being serious or not. “I think that deep down you’re just a softy.”
“Are you trying to pick a fight with me right now?” I set my sandwich down on the tray and crack my knuckles. “Because I’m not going to fight a girl.”
“That’s such a typical guy answer.” She hurries and takes a drink, but I detect a hint of a smile before her lips wrap around the straw.
“You know what I think?” I cross my arms on the table and lean in, cocking my head to the side as I observe her closely. “I think you like arguing with me and that’s why you’re bringing this up.”
Her shoulders lift and descend as she takes a bite of her hamburger. “Maybe, but maybe I’m being serious.”
“You know that as a football player I have to tackle guys, right? It takes strength to do that.”
“Maybe you just run, though,” she counters. “Maybe you’re just good at running.”
The way she says it reminds me so much of my past and it’s like a kick to the stomach. “Maybe I’m not, though. Maybe I suck at running.” I sound choked and I decide it’s time to cut this conversation short, my brain seeking that potent taste of Jack and Tequila mixed with nicotine. I glance at my watch, pretending to check the time. “I just remembered that I have to meet Kayden somewhere in like a half an hour, so I’m going to have to take you back.”
She balls up the wrapper for her hamburger, acting nonchalant, but her shoulders are stiff. “Sounds good to me. I was done anyway.” She seems irritated and I have no idea why, other than she seems to be able to read through my bullshit and test me, which most people can’t and won’t even try. I’m supposed to be a closed book. A mystery. That way no one can see who I really am. It’s the way I’ve been living for years and it’s comfortable. Not ideal, but nothing is ideal.
We don’t talk as I collect our garbage and then walk next to her as she limps out to my truck. I try to offer her my arm and open the door for her, but she denies my offer, moving to the opposite door and pushing it open.
During the car ride, she barely says two words to me. I should be happy about it. That way there’s no room for sudden questions and statements that will set me off, however I find myself missing the bantering thing we had going and the way she pushed my buttons. By the time I drop her off, all I want to do is ask her to stay, talk some more, let me get to know her. But I don’t understand why. I’ve never wanted to get to know anyone before. I’ve never even been out on a date. Each woman I’ve been with, I’ve only been with once. Just sex. That’s all it’s ever about. And I’ve never wanted anything more.
Until now.

Review: Under Different Stars (Kricket#1), by Amy Bartol

18845233

“You cannot thrive under the wrong stars, Kricket.”

I have loved Amy Bartol, since I first read her Premonition series. So when I found out she was writing another series, I was excited to read it. When I saw the cover, I knew it was going to be different. And I was correct. I will admit that for the first 25% I was confused with all the names and titles of things. Since this takes place on another planet, everything is different. I highlighted a ton and kept going back for reviewing. 🙂 Eventually I forgot about the names and just followed the story.

17 yr old Kricket has always wanted a home and family. After growing up in the foster care system, she decides to break out of it and find her own way. She’s been doing that for two years and she just wants to get to her 18th birthday, so she can quite looking over she shoulder.

Trey Allairis is a soldier, sent from her planet, along with his friends, Wayra and Jax, to bring her back. She doesn’t want to go, but she doesn’t have a choice. And as they make their way to her real home, he realizes that she is more than just a mission. He also discovers that she isn’t a timid little flower and can stand up for herself against big strong soldiers. Slowly she wraps them around her little finger.

Kricket learns that she has powers, with the potential for many more, and that makes her a hot commodity. She just wants to go back to Earth, but there is no escaping. She must learn how to conform to her current situation, while holding herself together. When all the five houses of Ethar start vying for her, she must make some difficult decisions and rely on Trey to help her.

Kyon knows about Kricket, and her potential powers, and wants her for himself. And he will do anything to get her. No matter what Kricket does to dissuade him, he will not back down. Either he will have her, or no one will.

Slowly, but surely Trey realizes his feelings for her and decides he would do anything to protect her, even if it means to let her go to an enemy. As long as she’s alive, he can move on.

“If I touch her, she’ll have my soul”

I can’t wait til the next book comes out. I know I have long to wait, but it’ll be worth it. I must know what happens!! Will Kricket be able to be with Trey, without fear?? What happened to Kyon?? I MUST KNOW!!!

Review: If I Stay, by Gayle Forman

6564365

Summary:

On a day that started like any other,

Mia had everything: a loving family, a gorgeous, admiring boyfriend, and a bright future full of music and full of choices. In an instant, almost all of that is taken from her. Caught between life and death, between a happy past and an unknowable future, Mia spends one critical day contemplating the only decision she has left. It is the most important decision she’ll ever make.

Simultaneously tragic and hopeful, this is a romantic, riveting, and ultimately uplifting story about memory, music, living, dying, loving.

This is my second time reading this. I’ve been seeing all the still shots, from the movie, on Gayle Forman’s FB page and it got me in the mood to reread it. Since I’m a fast reader, I tend to read a lot and therefore forget a lot. I remembered bits and pieces, but as I saw the pictures I realized I was missing bigger pieces. So I bit the bullet, grabbed a box of tissues and my kindle and settled down for an emotional ride.

Let me tell you, this book caught me off guard. I knew what it was about, but I wasn’t prepared for how the scenes would play out and how they would affect me. These kind of books are why I’m always buy tissues by the case and why I get so excited when I find someone who enjoys reading. The release I get, from these crazy crying books, leave me feeling content.

18 yr old Mia thought her hardest decision was following her musical heart and going to Julliard or following her love heart and staying with her family and the love of her life. Never did she realize how simple those choices would be. Now an accident has taken everything away from her and she is now caught in between and she’s trying to decide to stay or go. She spends her time watching as her family and friends grieve and hold vigil for her, and remembering the past and how it’s shaped her and gives her the ability to make this decision.

As her dad would say, “Sometimes you make choices in life and sometimes choices make me.” She struggled with knowing that if she stays, her life would never be the same. But leaving just doesn’t feel right either.

Seeing her past memories and how they shaped her, makes her decision even harder. But the music part of her, tugged on my heart. I found myself listening to Yo-Yo Ma and feeling all those emotions with her.

But I really loved seeing her with her rock star boyfriend, Adam. The shy and awkward phase was so sweet. Watching them, grow to love each other, made me smile. When we sees her, lying battered and bruised, in the hospital bed, tears were pouring out of my eyes. I had to set my kindle down, cuz I couldn’t see past my tears.

“Please Mia,” he implores. “Don’t make me write a song.”

My heart was breaking every time someone came and spoke to her. They were trying to help her make her choice. But truly, how could you choose??

“Dying is easy. Living is hard.”

Here is the movie trailer. I am super excited for this!! I get chills just watching it.

Review and Blog Tour: Elect(Eagle Elite #2), by Rachel Van Dyken

18210033

Would you die for the one you love?

Nixon Abandonato made his choice. And now he has to pay the price. Tracey is the love of his life, but being with him has made her a target of his family’s enemies. The only way to keep Trace alive is convince the world she means nothing to him.

Trace Rooks has fallen irrevocably in love with the son of her family’s sworn rival, and she knows in her bones nothing can tear them apart. Until Nix suddenly pushes her away and into the arms of his best friend… But Trace isn’t ready to give up on a future with Nix–and if he won’t fight for them, she will.
In the end, a sacrifice must be made. A life for a life. For what better way to cover a multitude of sins than with the blood of a sinner . . .

“I feel lost”
“Let me find you.”
“I feel sick.”
“Let me heal you.” I kissed her head.
“I feel sad.”
“Let me be your happiness.”

WOW!! What a ride! This is like The Godfather for young adults. I highly recommend reading Elite first, otherwise you’re missing out on basically everything. It’s written from many different point of views. I liked seeing how Nixon and Chase, and even Phoenix handle the pressure and stress of living in a mob, and knowing that your days are numbered.

Nixon loves Tracey, and has for his entire life. But loving her has now put her in grave danger. The only way to keep her alive is to push her away. But what’s even harder, is that he pushed her towards his best friend, Chase.

Chase loves Tracey, but he knows he can’t really do anything about it. He is loyal to his friend. But he will do everything he can to protect her, even if it means convincing her to choose him.

Tracey loves Nixon and doesn’t want to be left behind. She wants Nixon, but understands that he needs to do his job and protect her the only way he can. She know’s it hurts him to let her go, but he has to hold onto hope, that it will all work out.

“I’m going to apologize in advance, though.” Tracey sniffed as a tear ran down her cheek.
“Why are you apologizing”
Her eyes met mine. “Because I’m going to break your heart.”

Watching Trace with Chase and seeing how hard it was for Nix, was painful to watch. He was no longer living his life for himself. He was living, and willing to die, for her. But he needed to make some very difficult choices and watch his family deal with those choices.

Seeing the background on Phoenix, made me like him a bit more. I didn’t fully trust him, but I understood him. His days were truly numbered. 😦 In the end, he was a friend to Nixon, when he needed one.

Phoenix slapped me on the back. “If it’s any consolation, she clearly loves you.”
“How would you know?” I snapped.
…”The way she looks at you. It’s different than how she looks at Chase.”
“And how does she look at Chase?”
“Like he’s her savior,” Phoenix said softly.
“And me?”
“Like you’re her oxygen.”

I was dying for the situation to be resolved, so that Nix and Trace could be together! I was starting to get a bad feeling about have way through. But I had faith it would all work out. Trace had no choice but to go towards Chase, even though her heart wanted another.

“You have my heart, but Nixon…he owns my soul.”

*heart breaking*

When it was all said and done, hearts were broken, lives were taken, but the truth came out. None of them will be the same after this, but they know if they have family, they can get through anything. There was a bit of a twist in the end, so I’m curious as to what will happen in the next book. I’ve got a feeling, but I’m gonna keep it to myself. 😉

Review: Before We Fall, by Courtney Cole

18081633

“Before we fall, we fly.”

WOW!! I need to collect the pieces of my heart before I can even type another word…

This is the first book I’ve read by Courtney Cole. But this will definitely not be the last. This was such an emotional book. Not in my usual cry my eyes out, but in a raw and dark emotional type. It made me all twisted inside.

Dominic Kinkaide’s been closed up and in a very dark place, for the past six years. He’s been hiding it from the world. Only his close family knows something happened, by they don’t know what. But whatever happened, it’s left him dark and seriously twisted. Seriously twisted and very broken. He was basically just a shell of the man he once was. He doesn’t let anyone get close to him and he doesn’t like people. He thinks everyone will let him down, so he won’t take any chances.

Jacey is a strong willed, no holds barred kinda girl. But she is also a bit broken inside. You don’t really realize what she’s been through til about half way through. You just know she’s looking for something to fill a void in her life, but hasn’t quite found it yet. So she’s just wandering around. When she first meets Dom, she is drawn to him and knows there is more than what he lets people see. She is determined to save him from everything that hurts him, even if it’s himself. She believes he’s a good man, no matter what he thinks.

After an unfortunate incident, they must work together, and their personal issues start to come to the surface and they’re forced to deal with them. Dom and his hot and cold behavior and Jacey’s need to fix things, bring out emotions that they both wish would be kept closed up.

There where so many emotionally charged scenes in this book. I was all over the place. Dom’s brokenness completely destroyed me.

“Fix me, Jacey…If you can.”

Watching him slowly come to the realization that there may be another person who loves him for him, was so powerful. Dom felt he was so unworthy of any type of love. He even told Jacey not to love him. But of course, she didn’t listen.

“I don’t know what I did to deserve you.”

“You exist.”

I was teary eyed for the last 15% of the book. But when I read that Epilogue, it was all over. My poor spouse thought something was wrong with me. I am so glad I read this. I know there is more I want to say, but it would give too much away.

Review: Remy by Katy Evans

17830559

“When I take you, you’ll be mine.”

Holy sexual tension, Batman!! I love reading male’s POVs cuz of all the emotions they feel, but this books is nothing like those. Now, don’t get me wrong, this book had emotion, but most of it was filled with sexual tension so raw, I was fanning myself a few times. He is a fierce lover. FIERCE!

It’s starts off on their wedding day. And while he’s waiting for Brooke, he remembers all those things that happened between them. I thought this book was going to basically be Real from Remy’s point of view. But I was wrong. It was Real and Mine together. I was very happy about that. It basically alternated between the now and then. I’m glad we got to see some of his scenes, where Brooke isn’t there. We never knew how he felt about going black and needing the shots. I felt so horrible for him, at those parts. I can’t imagine not being in control like that. Scary.

When we first see Remy meet Brooke, you see how he was thrown off balance, just like she was. It’s nice to see a guy off kilter. The way he wanted her was slightly overwhelming. He was quite obsessive for her. I never knew the depths of his needing love, until this book. He was basically thrown away, when all he wanted was love. He wants to give all of himself to Brooke, if she’ll take him.

And once he has Brooke, he will do everything to keep her.

“I’m not letting anyone take her. I’m not letting her go. I’m her Real. She’s Mine.”

I still loved the way music was intertwined throughout the book. Remy uses songs to show Brooke how he feels, since he can’t quite say the right things. The songs they picked were perfectly written for them. She seems to understand him more and more, with his song choices.

This was a nice ending to the Remy and Brooke story. I know there are more books coming, but those will be about some of their friends. Not that I’m complaining about this sexy fighter, but it will be a nice break from all his obsessive ways.

I received this ARC for an honest review.

Sneak Peek Review: Crash Into You by Katie McGarry

17233800 I have loved this series from the beginning – I gave the first book 5 stars, and the second 4 stars (as I wasn’t a big Beth fan). This is Isaiah’s story and he intrigued me from the first time we saw him in Pushing the Limits. I can’t help it, I like guys with tattoos. Guys with tattoos AND feelings? That’s not even playing fair in my opinion!

Isaiah has a crappy life, has been in foster care has a crappy Mom who was in prison but is now out. But he has a few things going for him and he knows it – Noah, his best friend being the most important. They’ve been through hell together and when Noah got out of the foster system he promised to take Isaiah with him and he hasn’t let him down yet. The other thing he has is his mechanical abilities – Isaiah knows he’s talented in that area and he uses it the best he can to make any money he can. He had a third thing – Beth his other best friend, but she disappeared into a better life.

Rachel, however, has a perfect life. She has wealthy parents and brothers who love and protect her…and no friends, crippling anxiety and too many secrets to count. The only thing that makes her happy is taking off in her Mustang. One night she ends up in a street race and when Isaiah saves her from Eric, a street thug who mean business, neither can figure out what just happened.

They have 6 weeks to get Eric the money he thinks they owe him or they are both completely screwed. Meanwhile, Rachel is drawn to Isaiah in ways she didn’t think she could be and Isaiah wonders what exactly she could see in him as messed up as he is.

What I love about Katie McGarry’s writing is that she really gets the details of every little thing. Every aspect of the book felt very fleshed out. From the minor background characters at the street races to the major characters like Rachel’s brothers. I really appreciated finding out in book 2 that Beth did not end up with Isaiah but what I appreciated even more in this book was that the romance did not falter at all. Obviously they had their ups and downs and big obstacles to overcome but there wasn’t hot and cold when it came to the emotions of the main characters. I felt that Rachel balanced Isaiah out much better than Beth ever could have.

I really, really disliked Rachel’s family and there is a scene in the book I all but stood up and cheered. Everyone but Isaiah took her for granted and no one appreciated her. It seemed like she was how many girls feel to the extreme.

Just a small taste of what I liked about the romance –

I don’t want to be without you. I like who I am with you, and I don’t want to go back to who I was before. I love you, Rachel. So this will work. No matter what or who stands in our way.

Overall this book had just about everything I could ask for in a young adult/new adult book: romance, action, family drama, guys with tattoos. OOH – also for fans of this series I just about died when I got to the end and found out that IT’S NOT DONE! She’s writing MORE! The next one will continue on with one of Rachel’s brothers. Who I really despise right now so I will hold out on judging it at the moment. But I love this author’s writing so YAY!

I received this ARC via the Publisher in return for an honest review from both NetGalley and Edelweiss.
