Review: Shadows by Paula Weston

cover33319-mediumYA Supernatural or Paranormal genre has gone through many different fads. Witches, vampires and werewolves have all been covered to a great extent in a ridiculous amount of books. Some have been wildly successful with the stories they’ve told, spawning movies and fandoms like crazy.

But I read a lot of books in the Young Adult genre and over the last few months I’ve seen an explosion of Angelic books. I’m a sucker for books that draw from an established mythology and either make it their own or expand the established mythology into an even greater one.

And that is exactly what Shadows does so well.  Paula Weston managed to take what I’ve come to expect in an Angel story and add even more to it. This was a very fast paced book – in a good way – I didn’t want to put it down.  The world building done within the book was excellent, letting us see what we need to establish what is to come in the rest of the series.

While this is going to be a series, the ending was not cliffhanger-ish enough to drive me crazy. It left me wanting more but not to the people of being angry at the book. I liked the young adult/ new adult vibe Shadows has as well. Gaby is coping with the death of her twin brother, Jude and trying to move on with her life when the angelic world is brought solidly into her life and is forced to deal with the shocking consequences that brings along with it.

I can’t wait to read the rest in the series. I really liked the secondary characters and want to see much more of Rafa, Jason and Maggie.

I received this ARC from Netgalley in return for an honest review.

Review: What’s Left of Me by Kat Zhang

11043618 In this world all children are born with two souls in one body. One of those souls is expected to be recessive and to settle – basically fading away to nothingness. But when the norm doesn’t happen they’re called Hybrids and society considers them to be a very dangerous thing and force them to go through medical testing and counseling until the dominant soul is the only one left.

This is what Addie and Eva have gone through and come out the other side – but with a secret. Eva, the recessive soul, has survived. They consciously work daily to ensure that no one suspects this, not even their family.

“But understanding a thing and accepting it are so very different things.”

When they meet another Hybrid everything changes. Eva is given a chance to have a voice again and while Addie wants to stick with the status quo, for once Eva won’t let her. It’s incredibly dangerous and if anyone finds out they could be institutionalized or worse.

From the very beginning Kat Zhang’s prose grabbed me and pulled me into this world and into Addie/Eva’s head. The book is told from Eva’s point of view which is in stark contrast to her world, where she literally has no voice. Eva’s experiences were heartbreaking and very well expressed.

As the book progresses and there are more and more decisions to make we get to hear Addie and Eva’s internal monologue on how to deal with these new challenges. Addie has been used to being the dominant soul and letting go of that is hard for her but she still wants to give Eva the chance to not be hidden anymore.

I would highly recommend this book, it’s a different take that I’ve ever seen before and I am super excited to review the second book What We Were in a few weeks when it comes out!

Review: When the World was Flat (and We Were in Love) by Ingrid Jonach

15767908 This was an amazingly different Young Adult book. Different in a very good way. It captivated me from the first chapter and didn’t disappoint throughout the book. Do not let the science fiction genre title on this book scare you away!

Lillie lives in a small town with her Mom and has a small group of friends. Over the last few months she’s been having nightmares that feel very real and terrifying. But she doesn’t mention these to anyone because it’s kind of weird when you’re 16 and talking about bad dreams right?

It’s big news when Tom moves to the small town as there are very few new people in her school ever. Lillie feels very drawn to him but is rebuffed almost immediately. Yet they keep having interactions and at each one she feels that he may have the key to telling her what exactly is going on with her.

She eventually finds the truth and has to deal with that and how it affects the rest of her life and those around her since it changes things forever.

I loved the way this was written – I didn’t mean to finish it in one night but it just happened because I needed to know what was going on. I thought that Lillie was a very relatable character, I felt for her as she tried to figure out her feelings. Feelings of being so awkward around a boy she liked, trying to figure out what the hell was going on with her friends and dealing with bitchy girls in high school.

But on top of that traditional YA part of the book was the sci-fi part of the book. I don’t read sci-fi. Like ever. But this melded extremely well together and I loved the way it was done. I was fascinated throughout. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves YA books but wants something a little bit different. The book comes out tomorrow and you should get it!!

I received this ARC in return for an honest review.

When the World was Flat (and we were in love)

Review: Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness

11559200This book is an excellent follow up to A Discovery of Witches. I was afraid that the sequel would not live up to my expectations that have been building for a year since I read the first one. Luckily, that fear was incorrect.

Shadow of Night starts immediately where Discovery left off and begins to weave in various historical figures throughout the book right up until the end. In the first book there were many descriptions about the food and wine with great detail, in this one the detail is in the historical aspects. I loved the historical features and characters in this book and felt that just as the descriptive food and wine gave the first book authenticity so did the historical features here.

I loved getting glimpses of various historically famous places and people. Like any good book it made me want to go find out more. I have no doubt I will be reading about Christopher Marlowe and Walter Raleigh due to this book.

The relationship between Matthew and Diana also did not disappoint. There was both romance and intrigue along with more secrets that hadn’t been revealed before. There was enough suspense and action to keep my interest and balance out the romance.

I loved this book, just as much as the first one. I own both audio and Kindle versions because the narrator is so amazing. I will be waiting on pins and needles for the third book. Undoubtedly it will go in my favorites shelf as well. I was able to get a hardcover of this signed by the author, so now I own all of the version of this one just about!

But it Now Shadow of Night: A Novel (All Souls Trilogy)

Review: Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper

660976511 year old Melody has Cerebral Palsy and has always been overlooked and under rated – by pretty much everyone except her parents. She has a photographic memory, is incredibly intelligent but she also cannot talk at all. We get to hear Melody’s thoughts on everything from her Doctor telling her mother that she is mentally handicapped and can’t learn anything more to her special education classmates.

Melody is funny and has an incredible outlook on her life.

A person is so much more than the name of a diagnosis on a chart.

From the time I was really little—maybe just a few months old—words were like sweet, liquid gifts, and I drank them like lemonade. I could almost taste them. They made my jumbled thoughts and feelings have substance. My parents have always blanketed me with conversation. They chattered and babbled. They verbalized and vocalized. My father sang to me. My mother whispered her strength into my ear.

Melody gets frustrated with people taking her for granted and no one paying her any attention. But she discovers something that can give her back her power of speech. From there Melody’s life starts to change – both for the bad and the good.

I found this book incredibly touching and unexpectedly funny.  I think that this is a great book for teens and younger to read – it’s entertaining but also teaches a great lesson in how to treat others. But as an adult I also really enjoyed this and would highly recommend to anyone.

Review: I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella, Narration by Jayne Entwistle

12033455I’ve read a few Sophie Kinsella books – The Shopaholic books are extremely cute and really good “chick lit”. I didn’t LOVE them, but liked them a lot. So after reading some reviews of I’ve Got Your Number it seemed this one could be really good, maybe great. It so did not disappoint!! I listened to the audible book and the narration was so good – she didn’t just read the book out loud, she became Poppy Wyatt, the main character. It’s actually been a few months since I listened to this and I still can hear her voice perfectly in my head.

Poppy Wyatt is getting married to her dream guy, Magnus. In the very opening of the book Poppy loses her family heirloom engagement ring at a hotel and immediately after loses her phone in the chaos. When Poppy finds a different phone and grabs it to be able to report the stolen ring and phone things get fun because she picked up the phone of businessman Sam’s assistant.

What follows throughout the book are email exchanges, text messages and voicemails.  Through all of these different formats Poppy gets to know Sam and feels that she has a good sense of him.  I love the use of these formats in books, to me it adds so much more because it shows how the characters communicate with others.

I’ve never shared an in-box with anyone in my life. I didn’t expect it to feel so…intimate. It’s as if we’re suddenly sharing an underwear drawer or something.

Hi-jinks ensue throughout the book while Poppy tries to get her ring back and also hide the fact she lost the ring from her fiancee. Poppy also gets involved with business matters of Sam’s since she has his phone and receives all of his work communication there as well.

I loved this book. It surprised me with the comedy, I was laughing out loud at some of the exchanges between Poppy and Sam. But it also has a touching quality to it as Poppy examines her relationships and rethinks judging people right away. Poppy’s sense of right and wrong is great and the overall sense of humor the book has made me love it.

“I have no idea what to say next. I don’t speak Japanese, I don’t know anything about Japanese business or Japanese culture. Apart from sushi. But I can’t exactly go up to him and say “Sushi!” out of the blue. It would be like going up to a top American businessman and saying “T-bone steak!”

I highly recommend this book, it’s extremely funny and touching at the same time. All of the characters were very realistic and I felt that I know people exactly like them. This is a stand alone romantic comedy that I don’t think anyone should miss!

Review: Plus One is a Lucky Number by Teresa Morgan

18299025 Sophie has a “plus one” wedding coming up quickly and is dreading everything about it. She’s been in a rut, mostly just working as an Engineer and hanging out at a local pub with her co-workers. Definitely no dating or “plus one” to speak of. When a friend sees the invitation in her purse he quickly pushes her to bring Adam, a gorgeous co-worker with a playboy image.

When the weekend comes it starts off rocky and more than a little awkward. They put on a pretty believable show in front of the wedding party and Sophie’s friends though. They slowly start to connect and discover they have more in common than they thought. But both are hiding secrets from each other and from themselves. The question is can they come clean with each other and where do they go after the wedding weekend?

This was a quick, fun read that I really enjoyed. I liked that Sophie was an Engineer and while she may not have all of her life together she does have her work life in order. She loves what she does and she’s good at it. Adam was likable too and I found myself rooting for both of them pretty quickly. They bring out the best in each other and I thought the HEA was perfect.

This one comes out on August 29th.

Musings: Why I love to read

Obviously I love to read. It would be odd if I wrote reviews for books and hated to read, right? I get asked all the time why I love to read, or how I find the time to read.

I always read. You know how sharks have to keep swimming or they die? I’m like that. If I stop reading, I die. – Patrick Rothfuss

I’m incredibly lucky in that my awesome mother instilled in me a love of reading. I remember being very young and her reading to me, and when I got older I would read out loud to her. My grandfather built me an awesome toy chest and it was always full, but not with toys. I had that thing packed to the brim with books. It actually still is full of my childhood books in my parents attic (which I so need to move to my house lol).

I’m lucky because I was surrounded with people who loved books growing up. At my grandparents’ house there was an entire wall of built in bookshelves, which were of course packed with books. My grandpa always had a book by his chair. In our family we would go to my grandparents’ house every Saturday morning for donuts and hanging around with my cousins, aunts and uncles. I have vivid memories of reading in the corner of the living room. They had a great library of classics for children – Shakespeare, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, pretty much everything, and it was pared down to almost a graphic novel/book. Recently, when my grandpa died my cousin made sure to save some of these for me. I started crying immediately when I saw them because they’re so wrapped up in my memories of him.

441_10200202835616965_669610027_n

I’m lucky because growing up my Mom took me to the library all the time. I loved story time. I could never carry all the books I wanted. This continued and I remember stopping at the library after school all the way until I graduated High School. I also remember the fines I racked up…good thing I worked as a teen and could pay some of them!

I’m lucky because now that I’m an adult I can appreciate all of those things and how they shaped me into who I am today. When my guidance counselor asked what I wanted to do as a profession I told her that I wanted to read books all day. The reading comprehension and understanding I gathered helped me excel in all my classes in college- obviously in my Literature classes but just as much in Business classes or Sociology classes. It definitely helped me be able to write papers for all my classes and in particular my 25 page thesis (you do not want to know the subject lol!).

Now I can’t go to sleep without reading. I consciously make an effort to go to bed much earlier than necessary so I can read for a few hours before bed. I’m lucky that I have a husband who understands my need to read. I can’t imagine my life without reading. It would be so much more boring and gray. I’m always astonished at statistics that show people who don’t read. My entire life would be different without the thousands of books I’ve read and in a bad way, of that I’m sure.

Review: Girls in Trouble by Caroline Leavitt

227781

Sara is a 16 year old girl who is pregnant and madly in love with her boyfriend. Her parents don’t “get” her and don’t approve of their relationship because Sara is supposed to be college bound and they think this is distracting her. When Sara goes to tell Daniel about her pregnancy he doesn’t react the way she thought he would and he disappears. She finally chooses to put the baby up for adoption but can’t find any family that seems to be a good fit.

She finds what she is looking for in George and Eva and they decide on an open adoption. They become like second parents to her throughout the pregnancy, supporting her and listening to her when Sara’s own parents don’t want to hear about her issues. After Sara gives birth things change for everyone.

I really enjoyed this book about open adoption because I felt like I was seeing the issues from all points of view without much bias. The POV does alternate between Sara and the adoptive parents and we also get a glimpse into the birth father’s thinking a few times as well. I could relate to all of their emotions and the complications they go through.

I literally couldn’t put this book down, as I was so interested in hearing what happened next in each person’s life. I thought each person was multifaceted and flawed, which made them come to life for me. This is my second Caroline Leavitt book and I really enjoy her narrative style and think she has a beautiful way of telling her stories.

Review: Her Favorite Temptation by Sarah Mayberry

18184035This novella felt more like a full length novel to me, which is definitely a good thing. Leah is a cardiovascular surgeon who is making a change in her specialty and going against her patents wishes. When she meets Will she thinks he’s handsome and had a great voice. Will is shocked she doesn’t recognize him as part of the duo who has been all over the radio the last few years.

The two strike up a friendship although both are clearly attracted to each other. Their friendship grows as they try to ignore their feelings.

I love both characters here. Leah is obviously a very strong female lead, smart and headstrong. Will has charm and is very there for Leah when she needs him. Their interactions were warm, funny and annoying as I clearly wanted them together immediately.

Sarah Mayberry does the buildup to the romance perfectly, leaving the readers ready to scream if the couple doesn’t kiss this instant. But of course they eventually do and sparks fly. We get our HEA at the end, after a few obstacles having been overcome. This is a sweet romance and a quick read.

I loved the whole thing from beginning to end. This was intended to be a short story but the author ended up writing more (yay for us!) and is the lead in for her next full length book – Her Favorite Rival. That will tell the story of Audrey, Leah’s older sister, who we get to see quite a bit of in this one. I’m a fan of lead in books and getting to see bits of one character and then see them be the lead in the next.

I can’t wait to read her next one!
