Do you listen to books?? I must admit, up til a year ago, the only audible books I listened to were Hank the Cowdog, with my kids. I’m dead serious. They’re funny as heck, but when you find yourself listening, in your car, ALONE, it’s time to be a grown up and listen to grown up books.

Around this time last year, I grabbed a ton of the classics, which were free at the time. But have I listened to them?? That would be a big fat NO. However, around this past March, a friend gifted me Maybe Someday, by Colleen Hoover. Since I already read the book, I wasn’t sure how I was going to like it. But, I stinking loved it!! I fell in love with Zachary Webber, during this book. Seriously. That kid can read me the phone book and I would sit and listen to it.

Since then, I’ve found myself buying more and actually wanting to walk my dog and go grocery shopping alone, just so I can listen to some books. So far this year, I’ve listened to Flat-Out Love, by Jessica Park, Red Hill, by Jamie McGuire, Hopeless, by Colleen Hoover, and Divergent, by Veronica Roth. I started The Fault in Our Stars, but never finished and I’m currently listening to Outlander: A Novel.

But by far, the BEST BEST BEST audible I’ve listened to is The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay. I’ve read the book a couple times and it’s in my top 5, but when I listened to it, I lived it. The guy who does the guy’s voice, Kirby Heyborne, did an amazing job!! He had such emotions I seriously thought he was crying. He sounded so believable. If anyone asks what audible they should try, I always tell them this one. Talking about it now, kinda makes me wanna go and listen again.

Sometimes the book is read by a single person, which can be good or bad. I’ve tried to listen to a few and found them quite annoying, but some I find, very enjoyable. My first experience was with Flat-Out Love. At first I wasn’t so sure I was going to like it, but after a little bit, I actually forgot it was only one person. That book was so sweet and funny, I actually startled a few people, in the grocery store, when I was listening to it.

Some books are read my numerous people. Red Hill, for example, was read by three different voices. Zachary Webber *sigh* was one of them. I actually had my hubby listen to this one, on our way to Chicago, in June. The story was so well written, that I was on the edge of my seat listening. My poor hubby kept getting shushed, even though I read the book before. I just wanted to listen to them, not him. The voices were so smooth I felt like I was in a trance.

So far I’ve only listened to books that I’ve already read. I think I enjoy the story more that way. For me, if I never knew the story, I think it would be hard to pay attention. I know I would miss things. My life isn’t always silent and I get distracted easily. So I think I’ll keep to previously read books. Up next, on my audible list, Ugly Love, by Colleen Hoover.

Review: I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella, Narration by Jayne Entwistle

12033455I’ve read a few Sophie Kinsella books – The Shopaholic books are extremely cute and really good “chick lit”. I didn’t LOVE them, but liked them a lot. So after reading some reviews of I’ve Got Your Number it seemed this one could be really good, maybe great. It so did not disappoint!! I listened to the audible book and the narration was so good – she didn’t just read the book out loud, she became Poppy Wyatt, the main character. It’s actually been a few months since I listened to this and I still can hear her voice perfectly in my head.

Poppy Wyatt is getting married to her dream guy, Magnus. In the very opening of the book Poppy loses her family heirloom engagement ring at a hotel and immediately after loses her phone in the chaos. When Poppy finds a different phone and grabs it to be able to report the stolen ring and phone things get fun because she picked up the phone of businessman Sam’s assistant.

What follows throughout the book are email exchanges, text messages and voicemails.  Through all of these different formats Poppy gets to know Sam and feels that she has a good sense of him.  I love the use of these formats in books, to me it adds so much more because it shows how the characters communicate with others.

I’ve never shared an in-box with anyone in my life. I didn’t expect it to feel so…intimate. It’s as if we’re suddenly sharing an underwear drawer or something.

Hi-jinks ensue throughout the book while Poppy tries to get her ring back and also hide the fact she lost the ring from her fiancee. Poppy also gets involved with business matters of Sam’s since she has his phone and receives all of his work communication there as well.

I loved this book. It surprised me with the comedy, I was laughing out loud at some of the exchanges between Poppy and Sam. But it also has a touching quality to it as Poppy examines her relationships and rethinks judging people right away. Poppy’s sense of right and wrong is great and the overall sense of humor the book has made me love it.

“I have no idea what to say next. I don’t speak Japanese, I don’t know anything about Japanese business or Japanese culture. Apart from sushi. But I can’t exactly go up to him and say “Sushi!” out of the blue. It would be like going up to a top American businessman and saying “T-bone steak!” 

I highly recommend this book, it’s extremely funny and touching at the same time. All of the characters were very realistic and I felt that I know people exactly like them. This is a stand alone romantic comedy that I don’t think anyone should miss!

Review: Always Watching by Chevy Stevens; Narrated by Joyce Bean

16044953 Chevy Stevens’ debut novel Still Missing surprised me and kind of blew me away with how much I loved it. Her second novel, Never Knowing was almost as good so I was really looking forward to Always Watching, her third novel. I chose to get the audio book because I love to listen to them.

There are many narrators I love and rarely do I find one that I hate. Joyce Bean was just kind of meh. I found her to be too monotone almost immediately but figured that the story would outweigh the narrator. I was so wrong.

Nadine is a psychiatrist who works in the lockdown ward of the psychiatric hospital. She is treating a young woman who had spent time with a cult when that triggers her own unhappy memories from the time she was with the same cult. She uncovers some nasty memories that she was unaware of and her life kind of spins out of control from there. Her own daughter is a homeless runaway. Nadine tries to put all these pieces together.

There is very little I liked about this book. The plot felt contrived and forced from the beginning. There wasn’t one character I really felt anything for – I didn’t feel one way or the other about anyone in the book. Honestly, I just wanted the book to be over. There is a “mystery” of what the uncovered memories will reveal but it was obvious to me. There was a mystery throughout the book dealing with the cult leader and his nefarious ways. But my overwhelming feeling was I don’t care.

I found Nadine to be whiny, I really disliked her daughter and her brother was annoying.

As I got further into the audiobook the narration got worse and worse to me – the monotone in the beginning got worse. The only reason I finished it is because I loved the author’s first two books so much.

If someone else read and liked it please let me know what I was missing out on!

Review: Gameboard of the Gods by Richelle Mead; Narration by Emily Shaffer

13477883 In looking for a new audiobook I was surprised to find a new series by Richelle Mead that I had heard nothing about. I really enjoyed Richelle’s first series The Vampire Academy due to the strong female characters and take no crap attitude. I listened to the first few books in the spin off series of Bloodlines and really enjoyed that one because even though it continued some of the same characters it was still pretty different from the original series. I also really liked Emily Shaffer, she did a great job narrating both male and female characters. So when I saw that she was going to narrate this one too I immediately bought it.

Gameboard of the Gods is set in the future where society is pretty segregated into different classes. Mae was born into the elite upper class but is now a member of the militaristic Praetorian Guard. Justin was previously an investigator of “religious groups and supernatural claims” as a revered servitor but was exiled four years ago. He is brought back after a series of difficult to solve murders take place and Justin and Mae are teamed up to solve the crimes.

I wanted to give up on this book multiple times but I didn’t solely because I’d liked so many of her other books. At the end I was left wishing I had given it up. The audiobook was around 16 hours which was about 12 hours longer than I wanted of this world. I didn’t understand the segregation of classes or the reason for the segregation and it wasn’t really ever explained.

Much worse than that was that Justin literally talked to birds in his head. Let me repeat – he talked to birds in his head. I’m not sure when exactly we found out the reason for this but it was very, very late in the story and I saw no real understanding of why we couldn’t have been told this information much earlier.

At the end of the book I was left feeling very meh. I will definitely not be reading further in this series.

2 stars for the book. 4 for the narration.
