Quick review: Rebel Spy by Veronica Rossi

When was the last time you read a book and immediately wanted to to research about the characters?

I adore books like this. Fiction books based on real characters sprinkled with historical facts. The idea of a young rebel spy, hidden in plain sight, among fine society intrigued me. And as I finished the book I sat with tears in my eyes. This young lady was real! Rebel spy 355 took her life in her hands for what she believed was right. She risked everything for this country! I am amazed by this. I had no idea things like this happened!

Spying let me breathe again. It let the sunlight shine through the cracks, to reach the soul of me.The truth. The suffocating, hidden girl.

Veronica Rossi has a way with words that makes you feel as though you are living right along side them. This is a beautiful and inspiring YA standalone with a bit of romance swirled with intrigue. If you’re looking to feel inspired and motivated to make a change, then I highly recommend you grab this book and get ready for excitement.

I am in such a book fog right now. This book will definitely be in my top 10 of 2020!

Review: The Business of Blood by Kerrigan Byrne

To say I love Kerrigan Byrne’s historical romances would be an understatement. To say I’m not a fan of blood and guts would also be an understatement. However, when you combine those two, I get over the second fact right quick and jump all over this.

This story is just perfect for this time of year. A murder mystery surrounding Jack the Ripper is just what this season needs.

Fiona spends her days and night cleaning up after death. It’s not a luxurious job but someone has to do it. She uses this job as a way to keep an eye out for the return of Jack the Ripper. Ever since he murdered her friend, two years, she is waiting for his return so she can help in his capture. When murders start appearing similar, she wonders if it’s him or a copycat. Pretty soon she’s in the midst of a mystery that will cost her more than she ever imagined.

I loved Fiona. To be as strong as she is, after what she’s been through, is absolutely amazing. I don’t think I could do that. She is the only woman in a man’s world of death and intrigue, but she holds her own. The men around her all have secrets and the more she does her job, more of their secrets will come to light.

When a heart was broken as many times as mine, it shouldn’t work anymore. But somehow it still did. It kept going.

And so long as it beat in it’s chamber, I’d search for the Ripper.

When we first heard about this new book, it was said to not be a romance. I love romance. I need romance. But when Kerrigan Byrne writes a book, you read that book. Now I don’t know where this series is going to go, but I find myself believing that there may be a few hints of romance in the air, a connection if you will. So I’m gonna cross my fingers and hope Ms. Byrne grants my wish. Even a teeny one.

Review: City of Thieves by David Benioff

Well, I’ll be. Not a non-fiction fan here. I can count on one hand the number of non-fiction books I’ve ever loved… EVER!  And I don’t like war books, either. Too much death and heartache. But when certain book friends rave about a book because it affected them so much, I sit up and listen. Plus this book was on sale for $2.99 when I bought it. 🙂

That’s the backstory. The main story is: I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BOOK.

City of Thieves is about two guys who normally wouldn’t be friends, thrown together for a week-long hunt for eggs during the German siege on Leningrad. It was a cold week for those young men. They almost die several times. They daily encounter other people’s death. And they fail over and over at finding eggs.

But they find something else. They find humanity in desolation and desperation.  They find friendship. They find courage. One of the men finds humor in everything (thankfully, because I frankly needed the comic relief). The other finds love.

And that’s the best part of the whole thing… That LOVE can be found even in the wasteland of hate and war. That there’s a love story here FLOORED me and satisfied me to no end. Oh and it’s a TRUE one. TRUE love. Sigh.

As for the eggs: they can be had for a small wager, but they are no prize.
